Why is he not suggesting a crown on my two root canalled teeth?

I have just had a root canal and am due to go back in a month for another one.
My dentist hasn't recommended a crown though and I am worried the fillings will just fall out.
Also, how long until after a root canal does the tenderness last and is it normal for the dentist to keep taking xrays?
